We all grew up with the fantasy that we can reach a state in life where everything is sorted and we will be happy ever after. Often we think that we will reach this state when we find that soulmate, get that villa or become a millionaire. That’s also what many of my clients hope when they come to me for life coaching.
Yet, we probably all know that eternal happiness is a fantasy. Life is not like that. We will always encounter happiness and sadness, pain and pleasure, success and failure – quite probably in equal measures.
That’s why, as a life coach, I don’t coach on happiness.
So where does this leave us in our personal growth journey?
5 steps for emotional balance
Well, there is a lot we can do to reduce the extreme mood swings that come with our our ups and downs and to use each crisis to our benefit.
STEP 1: Accept that the lows are part of life. Learn to love life unconditionally, with all its perceived benefits and flaws.
STEP 2: Understand that each crisis has a beneficial side. For example, it can bring us together as human beings and help us growing and creating. So whenever you feel down about something, look for the hidden learning and opportunity that comes from your crisis.
STEP 3: Develop a mindset of gratitude. If we practise being grateful regularly, our emotions become much more stable. Rather than focussing on what we do not have, we focus on what we have. From the state of gratitude, we also become much more resourceful.
