For coaching to be effective, it is important that you value your personal growth, are ready to change and open to being challenged. You also need to be willing to invest time and effort into coaching. According to your answers, you don’t meet these conditions. Maybe you don’t see the need to change right now, which is perfectly OK, or maybe another approach like therapy could be more suitable for you. Feel free to contact me to discuss alternative options. Since you do not feel passionately about your personal growth, you may not be willing to invest the time, money and effort that is required to make coaching effective. You may also find the sessions less enjoyable, not follow through on actions or give up when encountering hurdles. Maybe your life is already OK and you do not feel the need to change; or maybe you prefer the comfort of staying in your current situation. You answered that you can become defensive when being challenged constructively. This might get in the way of the coaching process. Constructive challenges are at the heart of coaching. Breakthroughs happen typically when your coach challenges the way you perceive yourself, the world around you and your beliefs about the future. All of this is done respectfully, with deep empathy and an intention to facilitate your growth. If this sounds too hard for you, or if you are the kind of person who would bite off your coach’s head every time he challenges you, coaching may not be right for you. A gentler approach such as a talking therapy may be more appropriate for you right now. You answered that your desire to be right and to “look good” in front of your coach is stronger than your interest in learning and growing. This could adversely affect the effectiveness of your coaching sessions. Coaching requires you to face blind spots and development areas, and to reflect on yourself with a certain degree of humility. If you find it hard to open up to your coach in an authentic way, be vulnerable and admit flaws, then your coaching sessions will probably remain superficial and potentially a waste of your time and money. You answered that you are not willing to step out of your comfort zone. Coaching is about creating change and personal growth and this happens outside the comfort zone. This does not mean that you need to do anything scary or against your will, but you need to be prepared to gradually stretch yourself beyond your current level. Since you are not ready to take action, you may find a talking therapy more appropriate. Coaching is forward-looking and solutions-orientated. As in therapy, it involves talking about your problems, but its ultimate goal is to facilitate you in taking practical steps to change your life outcomes. Maybe coaching will be more effective at a later stage in your life. You answered that you are not prepared to dedicate a few hours per week to your personal and professional development. This poses the question whether you are sufficiently dedicated to the coaching process to create value from it. Coaching is not just about what happens during your coaching sessions. Most of your growth will happen between sessions when you reflect on the discussions with your coach and apply insights to your life. Often you will also agree “homework” for you to complete between sessions. If you are not prepared to spend a few hours per week on your personal development, consider whether coaching is right for at the moment. A talking therapy could be a better alternative for you. You answered that you are not willing to challenge yourself and the world around you. If this is indeed the case, I recommend that you save your money as you would probably receive little benefit from coaching. Clients who experience deep transformational shifts from coaching are those who are ready to challenge everything they believe to be true about themselves, others and their future. They also challenge their habits and attitudes. If you are not willing to change what’s in your head, you can’t expect different life outcomes. You answered that you have no budget for coaching. There are ways to get coaching at a low budget; for example, coaching with trainees, group coaching or email support. But that’s not equivalent to having one-to-one time with an experienced top coach. Contact me to discuss what options are available to you.
