One of my life coaching clients recently called himself “lazy” and “disorganised” but then told me about the cleaning marathon that he performed to avoid what he thought he “should” be doing.
There was nothing lazy in the way he cleaned his house and he admitted that he was quite organised when it came to keeping it in good shape. Indeed, we are always organised those areas that matter to us and where feel empowered, and less in other areas.
By calling ourselves bad names like “lazy” and “disorganised” we create a negative label that defines how we experience our identity. That’s not very loving to ourself, nor is it productive.
In the case of my client, he was procrastinating. This normally happens when we either do not value the task in question, do not find it inspiring or if we are afraid of failing or succeeding in it.
Understanding this makes the problem much more manageable. Rather than beating ourselves up for being that “lazy” and “disorganised” person, we can tackle the reasons for our procrastination in a particular area in your life. This matters, because beating ourself up leads to more emotional stress and more procrastination.
I use the Enneagram to help my clients understand the real drivers behind their procrastination. Contact me at info@hansschumann.com to get fully assessed and receive your personal manual that tells you how you function at a subconscious level.
