How much do you love your job?

26/09/2016 by Hans Schumann

How to fall in love with your career
Share

When we start working with a new career coaching client, we often start by asking how they feel about their current job. How satisfied are you with yours?

The way you feel at work will be determined by a number of external and intrinsic factors. The combination of those factors will place your Motivation Levels somewhere between “vocational” and “angry”; and your Stress Levels somewhere between “energised” and “burnt out”.

Take stock of your job satisfaction

Let’s see where you are on this spectrum. Go to the table below and mark where your Motivation Levels and Stress Levels are in relation to your work situation:

Green Levels

If your levels are in the green sections of the above table, then congratulations!  You are doing well and probably enjoy a high degree of job satisfaction. Maybe you want to become more conscious about the things that you are already doing well and learn new tools to stay on this path as your personal and professional needs change.

Amber Levels

If your levels are in the amber section, it’s time to think about what is not working for you. You are still in a good position because things are not so bad that you need to take immediate action. You can plan your next steps from the relatively safe place of your current job or business. Don’t be complacent though!  You are aware of the warning signs, and if you stay in amber for too long it will grind you down. Without action, sooner or later you will move down to the red levels.

Red Levels

If your levels are in red, you need to take action as soon as possible for the sake of your mental and physical wellbeing. You could be risking mood swings, depression or health issues. Your problems at work could also affect other areas of your life, such as your family life. Ask yourself how long this has been going on. What has triggered it?  What is the situation telling you?  Once you have come up with some answers, it’s time to take action. Maybe it’s time to work with a career change coach to explore your options.

How to find a job you like

Most of our career coaching clients have no idea where to start when exploring alternative career options. My book: “Falling in Love With Your Job – How to create more excitement and fulfilment in your career” provides plenty of tools and guidance to help with this. You can also find tips in my article “How to find Job You Love.”

But you don’t have to do it on your own. That’s where a career coach comes in. Click here to book a FREE Discovery Call with me or one of my excellent hand picked associates. We can take you through the process step by step and you will learn a lot about yourself on the way.
